Jen's Gentle Days

Why I’ve Never Been a Coffee Person?

Something about coffee just doesn’t sit well with me. Never really has. Tea, on the other hand, that’s a different story entirely.

Growing Up With Tea

I grew up drinking tea, which probably isn’t surprising for anyone who knows me or has been following along here. Classic Asian teas were just part of everyday life at home - roasted brown rice green tea, jasmine tea, oolong tea. Simple, familiar, comforting. Not the English breakfast or chai variety - I’ve tried chai and it’s just not for me, but the classic, no-fuss kind that doesn’t need anything added to it.

It’s funny how the things you grow up with, just stick. Tea never felt like a choice - it just felt like home.

At the Café Though…

When I’m out at a café, my order almost always gravitates toward a matcha latte. There’s something about a good matcha latte that hits differently - earthy, slightly sweet, and warm without being overwhelming. It’s become my go-to without even really thinking about it.

With that being said, not every café does matcha well, and on the days where the matcha isn’t great or isn’t on the menu at all, I’ll lean toward something on the sweeter side - think along the lines of a Starbucks frappuccino equivalent. Something to balance out any bitterness without the caffeine aftertaste that coffee tends to leave behind. I haven’t quite acquired that particular taste yet, and I’m not sure I ever will.

By the way, if you are ever visiting Canada and curious about where to grab a caffeine fix, I did write a mini guide on Tim Hortons, a Canadian coffee chain, over on my main blog - [check it out here], for some helpful tips you may need to know before you order! 🇨🇦

What about you - are you a tea person, a coffee person, or somewhere in between? What’s your go-to caffeine drink throughout the day? Feel free to drop me an email here - I would love to know! ☕🍵

Anyways, that’s all the reflection for the day. Thank you for reading it.
