Why Revisiting Niagara Falls After 10 Years Felt Bittersweet?

The Same Place, A Different Me

Earlier this year in April, I made my way back to Niagara Falls for a little staycation or I should have said a weekend getaway after winter season. It had been YEARS since my last visit, and I could say that this one was much needed. I remember it had taken me almost ten years to go back for myself, and I was more than glad to see the place again. My experience was different this time because it was as if I saw it for the first time again, with a different perspective. I found it was a mix of the old and the new in one place. Everything seemed familiar, yet different somehow. It was a good experience, a very bittersweet feeling all together and maybe it had been ages since I travelled to the Falls. This was definitely an unexpected feeling! It's a strange kind of nostalgia, isn't it?

It reminded me of how much technology has changed over the same stretch of time. The last time I visited Niagara Falls, I wasn’t too obsessed with smartphones and social media platforms back then, compared to how advanced they are today and the endless scrolling capabilities of the short form videos. There was no obsessive need to document every single moment, no pressure to post in real time, no algorithm quietly deciding what kind of tourist you were supposed to be. You just... showed up and looked at the waterfall. Now, everywhere you turn, someone has a phone out - an obsession to capture every moment and post your version of "happiness", like this trip for example, I caught myself reaching for my phone more than I probably needed to during the day. The falls haven't changed, but the way we experience them absolutely has.

And maybe that's exactly what made going back feel so bittersweet. It wasn't just nostalgia for the place - it was a little bit of nostalgia for a simpler, quieter way of just being somewhere.

With that being said, I do not think you can go wrong by visiting a place twice. After all you don't want to keep going back, but every few years you should return to create new memories on top of the old ones. To me at least, it felt too tedious or less enjoyable to visit there too often. I am also glad I booked early because finding a hotel room in the area around the Falls was not cheap! Overnight is a good call so as not to be rushed back to Toronto on the bus or train.
